Collection: Chain Stitch

Cashmere chain stitch, also known as crewel embroidery, is a beautiful and intricate art form adorning luxurious textiles.  Using a specialized hooked needle called an "aari," artisans create a series of interlocking loops on cotton or linen fabric with fine wool yarn, resulting in a soft, textured embroidery often featuring elaborate floral motifs, paisleys, and naturalistic designs inspired by the region's heritage.

While the chain stitch technique has ancient origins, its unique application and artistry in Kashmir flourished under royal patronage, particularly during the Mughal era, influenced by Persian art.  Over time, Kashmiri artisans refined their skills, creating highly detailed and textured designs used to embellish shawls, rugs, curtains, and other home decor items, representing a remarkable blend of artistry, skill, and cultural heritage that continues to be an important craft in the region.
